Character.ai Bankruptcy: Shutdown Looms Without a Buyer
Character.ai, the AI chat platform that once drew a multibillion-dollar deal from Google, has filed for bankruptcy and put itself up for sale. If nobody steps forward to buy it, the service will shut down.
The company has set a timeline. The sale should close by early December 2026. Until then, the platform stays online and paid subscriptions continue as normal. After that, the outcome depends on whether a buyer appears.
Why the company says it failed
Character.ai points to three main problems:
- Lawsuits over harm to children. The company has faced legal action tied to how minors were affected by its chatbots. In one case, a teenager took his own life.
- Regulatory pressure. Scrutiny of the platform increased alongside the lawsuits.
- Operational problems. The company also cites difficulties in running the business.
