Reddit is closing two of its most open doors. On Wednesday, the company said it will stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13 and shut down its public API by March 2027. The reason it gives is automated scraping, and the timing lines up with the growing value of Reddit's data to AI companies.
The news came as part of a larger set of updates for moderators and developers. For people who still read the web through feeds, it is an unwelcome change.
Why RSS is going away
Reddit describes RSS as a "common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse." In its view, the feeds have become an easy way for bots to pull content off the platform in bulk.
Nvidia's new push to contain rogue AI agents launched on Monday with more than 100 companies on board. OpenAI was not one of them.
Other major players are also missing. Amazon, Google and Apple have not joined either. But OpenAI's absence stands out most, because its main rival, Anthropic, is listed as a supporter. Supporters are presumably expected to use and sell some version of the technology and to contribute features back to the project.
OpenAI has not rejected the effort outright. A company spokesperson told TechCrunch that OpenAI supports Nvidia's work. The two companies are already collaborating on agent security, including on one of the platform's core pieces of software.
The US Federal Trade Commission has opened an investigation into OpenAI, Anthropic and several other leading AI labs. The focus is possible violations of consumer protection law. The FTC is the federal agency that enforces consumer protection and competition rules. Government sources confirmed the probe, and the New York Post first reported the details.
The investigation matters because of the tools behind it. FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson intends to issue so-called Civil Investigative Demands. These are legally binding orders that can force companies to hand over internal documents and make executives answer questions. According to the report, the demands should go out within the next few weeks.
OpenAI is talking to investors about a new funding round of at least $30 billion. According to a Bloomberg report published on Tuesday, the round would value the ChatGPT maker at roughly $1.4 trillion. TechCrunch picked up the story, and OpenAI did not respond to its request for comment.
If the deal closes, it would be a pre-IPO round. Bloomberg describes it as a bridge between OpenAI's last private raise and its expected listing on the public markets next year.
A second "last round"
The timing stands out. In March, OpenAI raised $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation. That round was meant to be the final private raise before the company went public, and until recently the IPO was expected this year.
Several of the most powerful people in the AI industry gathered at the White House to sign an AI code of conduct with President Trump. The document sounds ambitious on paper. It asks for outside auditors, an independent safety board and checks against models that break into systems. But according to Politico, the code is only "morally binding." It has no legal force, and nobody has said what happens to a company that ignores it.
Who signed, and what they agreed to
Reuters reports that the signatories include Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI's Greg Brockman, Nvidia's Jensen Huang and Elon Musk. That is a heavyweight lineup. Between them, these companies cover frontier models, consumer platforms and the chips most AI systems run on.
